It’s 1983, and former Special Forces Sergeant Jackson “Mac” McCoy is tending bar at the infamous Dew Drop Inn in Washington, DC. It’s been a rough year in a long string of rough years. Seems like it’s all been downhill since he played running back for Ohio State. The Buckeyes won the title in ’68, but no NFL offers came for McCoy. So it was into Army Special Forces and off to Viet Nam. Back then, there wasn’t much else for a young black man from the south side of Chicago to do. 

McCoy lost count of how many tours he slogged through, how many horrible things he’d seen, but by ’75 he found himself tossed out into civilian life with all the PTSD you’d ever want. In the years since Nam, he lost jobs, his wife and kids, and any clue how to get on with his life. Since moving to DC, he’s been working at getting cleaned up, off the drugs and booze, and staying employed.
