UNEARTHLINGS

U N E A R T H L I N G S | The Dew Drop Inn

Rod Lopez looks around, over his shoulders, and takes a hard swallow of his drink. His hands are shaking, like he’s junk sick or scared out of his wits. Mac looks out the windows of the bar. Nothing out front but rain and two miserable homeless guys pushing a shopping cart. Rod continues the conversation …

You been having strange dreams lately, Mac? Like really strange?

Now you mention it, yeah. Lots of nightmares, but what’s it —

Those nightmares you been having, man. They’re like science fiction, aren’t they?

Yeah, like nothing I’ve ever had before. It’s like we’re back in Nam, but it’s not Nam, you know. It’s —

It’s like an alien planet, right? Like outer space.

Come to think of it, yeah. How’d you know?

Mac, I’m having the same dreams. Same with Manny and Tims and the rest of our crew from the 5th division.

No joke? You heard from those guys?

The thing is, we weren’t in Nam. None of us. Those memories are fake, implanted or something. And they’re wearing off. That’s why we’re having the nightmares. They’re the real memories coming back. We went somewhere else. Somewhere off this planet.

CHOOSE MAC’S RESPONSE:
That’s crazy, man. What the hell are you talking about?
You’re high, Rod. I ain’t got time for junkie bullshit. You need to leave the bar now.
